Hop a ride on the job train, literally

In a few short years, downtown Orlando will become an epicenter for travel thanks to the construction of the $1.3 billion SunRail Central Florida commuter rail system.

In addition, two Lymmo expansions are in the works in downtown Orlando — a $9.9 million, 3.8-mile east-west extension and a $12.5 million Parramore/Creative Village-area extension — that should be completed by 2013.

The expansions will connect riders to the future $200 million SunRail Central Station.

The transportation industry remained relatively flat during the past decade, with 1,080 workers in the downtown Orlando area, but that figure is expected to increase with the opening of the SunRail system that will employ thousands across Central Florida including the downtown area.

For example, public bus agency Lynx provides transportation for more than 85,000 daily using a fleet of more than 270 vehicles.

Insider viewpoint: “Orlando will reap the same benefits as many other urban communities around the country that are centered around high quality transit systems: jobs for building the transportation system and its accompanying parking, pedestrian walkways and such; and smart growth for businesses,” said Aaron Gorovitz, attorney and partner at Lowndes, Drosdick, Doster, Kantor & Reed, PA, who played a role in bringing SunRail to Central Florida, acting as a community advisor and lobbyist for the project.
