The 2020 Florida Legislature's regular session runs Jan. 14-March 13, and there's plenty for local businesses to keep an eye on.
Here's what leaders of some of the area's largest construction and real estate law firms are watching:
Michael Gibbons - construction shareholder, Lowndes
Bills he's watching: HB 897 (sponsored by Rep. Anthony Rodriguez) and SB 1422 (sponsored by Sen. Anitere Flores)
"They would completely rewrite major sections of Florida’s Construction Lien Law. Contractors, subcontractors and suppliers have grown accustomed over the past 30 years to the statutory requirements for preserving lien rights in connection with improving real property. If passed, this legislation would eliminate lien rights of subcontractors and suppliers, and upend decades of stable law prescribing how subcontractors and suppliers secure their rights to payment on construction projects in Florida."
